Dialogic reading is the process of having a dialogue with children around a book you are reading together.

"Summer in Our Town" was written and illustrated with the expressed purpose of inspiring conversations between you and your child as their awareness of the beautiful and busy world around them grows.

Research shows that interactive and dialogic book reading are the most effective ways to read with your children to build language and literacy skills.  “Summer in Our Town” employs interactive cues, varied text formations, and pictures within pictures to encourage a dialogic reading experience.

Dialogic reading is based on three main techniques - asking "what" questions, asking open-ended questions, and expanding upon what the child sees and says. This technique is especially effective for children who are talkers but who are not yet pre-readers (generally two and three-year-olds). It also keeps easily distracted early independent readers engaged by giving them more ownership of the flow and focus of the story.
